The Challenge
We are hiring an entry-level Field Data Collections Engineer to join our Materials and Tests (M&T) team.

In this role, you will:

• Assist the State Data Collection and Investigations Engineer by assisting with day-to-day data collection needs.
• Perform investigative work in the field and the laboratory to collect data, information and records on new products.
• Evaluate products to determine reasons for poorly performing materials and/or manufactured products which fail to perform as designed.
• Perform research, analyze collected data, information, and test results, and report findings and conclusions.
• Assist in the monitoring and performance evaluation of new/modified manufactured products and construction materials under evaluation, and implementation of new/modified procedures/specifications in the field and the lab.
• Assist the State Data Collection and Investigations Engineer in the operation of inspection equipment assigned to the Materials and Tests Unit, including Shaft Inspection Device Video Inspection System, Pipe Rover Video Inspection System, Concrete Core Drill, and other hand-held equipment.
• Aid the section by staying abreast of upgraded technology on data collection devices as well as new technology developed by the Industry.

What You Bring

• Computer software experience (spreadsheets, databases, & word processors).
• Demonstrated ability to prepare reports/letters and keep accurate records.
• Knowledge of electronic, hydraulic, and mechanical systems.
• Demonstrated experience with transportation construction and maintenance procedures.

Education & Experience

• Bachelors degree in Engineering; or
• An equivalent combination of training and experience.

Note

• We may require registration as a professional engineer with the NC Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.

We establish the acceptance criteria for materials and manufactured products to be incorporated into the NC highway system and ensure that these materials and manufactured products meet the high standards and will function as intended.

Our M&T Data Collection & Investigation team provides Quality Assurance on a variety of newly placed materials and products on highway construction projects. It also provides NCDOT with investigation services when there is a material problem on a project.

The Data Collection & Investigation Section Research aids NCDOT’s Maintenance, Construction, and other units in sharing responsibility for the monitoring of pavements, performing destructive and nondestructive testing of pavements as well as subsurface pipes and boxes, and other data collection efforts along the NC highway network.
